IRAM is an international research organization for (sub)millimeter astronomy supported by the CNRS (France), the Max-Planck Gesellschaft (Germany), and the IGN (Spain). IRAM operates two world-class research facilities, a 30-meter single-dish telescope (Spain) and NOEMA (France), the most powerful mm/submm interferometer of the northern hemisphere. NOEMA is expected to reach its full operational capabilities in 2019. IRAM also operates a European ALMA scientific support node (ARC) with the aim to provide support to ALMA users, both scientifically and technically.
IRAM invites applications for a postdoctoral research position at the ARC node in Grenoble. The successful candidate is expected to invest 50% of the time on personal astronomical research and 50% on support activities. The candidate is expected to provide assistance and advice to users in the preparation of ALMA proposals and observations, provide technical expertise in the analysis and interpretation of data to visiting astrono-mers, develop high-level data reduction procedures and, if possible, help to identify and develop synergies between the ALMA and NOEMA projects. Depending on experience and skills, the candidate may also be involved in activities to support the integration and science verification of NOEMA subsystems, and in particular of the new antennas.
The current position offers the opportunity for astronomers to work with world-class research facilities and pursue their career in a very dynamic and competitive field of research. IRAM's research program covers a wide range of subjects from ISM chemistry, planetary science, young stellar objects, late stage stellar evolution, to extragalactic research at low and high redshift.
We are seeking candidates with a PhD in astronomy and a strong interest in (sub)millimeter interferometry. Experience with ALMA, in developing software applications and working in an international research environment is an asset. Interested candidates should send their curriculum vitae, bibliography and statement of research interests, and arrange for two letters of reference. Applications received before Sep 04, 2016 will be given full consideration, but applications will continue to be accepted until the position is filled. The position is available immediately with flexible starting dates for a 2-year appointment with the possibility of extension. Applications and reference letters are to be submitted by email to the IRAM personnel department (firstname.lastname@example.org).
