IRAM is an international research organization for millimeter and sub-millimeter astronomy supported by the CNRS (France), the Max-Planck Gesellschaft (Germany), and the IGN (Spain). IRAM operates two world-class research facilities, a 30-meter single-dish telescope (Spain) and the mm/submm interferometer NOEMA (France). The scientific capabilities of the 30-meter telescope are continuously enhanced with state-of-the-art technology such as for EMIR, the multi-wavelength heterodyne frontend, and the large field-of-view continuum 1mm/2mm camera NIKA2. The 30-meter telescope has recently undergone a thorough process of upgrade, including a full upgrade of the servo control system and improvements of the primary mirror surface.

IRAM seeks a telescope operator at IRAM/Granada. Reporting to Head of the Group, and in close collaboration with the other members of the Operation Group and other technical groups (Telescope, Receivers, Computing, Administration), the position holder will perform the tasks summarized below. It is assumed that the duties to be carried out are not limited to those below and a flexible approach and willingness to adapt are required.

  • Control, supervision and safety surveillance of the telescope and scientific and technical instruments required for the astronomical observations.
  • Supervision of all ancillary equipment required for the Observatory operation
  • In close coordination with the Safety Manager at the Observatory, play key role in the safety of staff and visitors, both at the observatory and during the transport to/from the site.
  • In coordination with the Astronomer of Duty (AoD), support the visiting astronomers in their observations, either on-site or in remote mode.
  • Support the AoD and/or engineers in service observations, calibration and testing activities. Carry out basic service observations (e.g. VLBI, pointing campaigns, etc.) when required.
  • According the specific professional qualification, the needs of the Observatory and the agreement of the Observatory management, the operator might request, or be requested to carry out other activities within his/her working time, supporting tasks within any of the technical areas of the Observatory (telescope, receivers, backends, computers, astronomy etc.) The operation activities will have priority over any other technical duty.

The duty station will be the observatory in Loma Dílar near Pico Veleta (in Sierra Nevada), at an altitude of 2900 m. The yearly time allocation will be 1589 hours, in shifts of 7 days followed by the corresponding rest periods (typically one or two weeks). The shifts will alternate between day and night (usually 7am-7pm and 7pm-7am, respectively).

A degree or MSc in engineering or Physics is required. Previous experience in operation of scientific facilities will be an asset.

A good level of English and Spanish is required. French knowledge is considered a plus.

We offer an inspiring working environment, a competitive salary and social benefit packages.
