LOOKING FOR AN INTERNSHIP IN THE FRENCH ALPS?
MASTER STUDENTS NEEDED!
The Institute for Millimeter Radioastronomy (IRAM) in Grenoble, France, is a world leading astronomy institute, which operates two observatories: the NOEMA interferometer at Plateau de Bure in the French Alps, and the 30-m telescope at Pico Veleta near Granada, Spain. Besides the management of these observatories, IRAM hosts several research groups that develop new and evermore powerful instruments to detect radiation in the mm- and sub-mm range.
In the Superconducting Devices Group at IRAM we develop and produce the superconducting elements that are at the heart of our observatories. Our devices are used not only in our own observatories, but we have also contributed to the development of e.g. the ALMA interferometer. Besides development of settled technology such as SIS mixers, we actively helped develop the field of Kinetic Inductance Detectors, which are at the heart of the NIKA2 instrument that is currently being commissioned at our 30-m telescope.
In our group, we are looking for motivated students to help us embark on new research tracks. Possible projects include:
- Fully integrated on chip SIS mixers
- Parametric amplification and down-conversion using superconducting transmission lines
- Planar optics for mm-waves based on deep-etched silicon wafers
- Improving the sensitivity of the NIKA2 instrument
- Superconducting metamaterials for ground-based observation
For these projects, we are looking for Master students in Physics, Astronomy, or Electrical Engineering, that are interested to work in an international work environment at the feet of the French Alps (the nearest ski resort at only 30 minutes). If you fit this description, please contact
