Staff Astronomer Position for NOEMA

IRAM is an international research organization for millimeter and submillimeter astronomy supported by the CNRS (France), the Max-Planck Gesellschaft (Germany), and the IGN (Spain). The organization operates two world-class research facilities, the IRAM 30-meter telescope in Spain, and NOEMA, the largest millimeter interferometer of the northern hemisphere, in the French Alps. The institute also houses one of the nodes of the European ALMA science support center.
Job description
IRAM is seeking a highly motivated and skilled astronomer to work within the NOEMA Science Operations Group at IRAM headquarters (Grenoble). Applicants must have at least three years of postdoctoral experience, a proven track record of scientific research and observational experience with single-dish radio telescopes and/or radio interferometers. The successful candidate will join a team of highly skilled scientists and engineers and will have access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for astronomical research.
IRAM offers opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations and a stimulating work environment where scientists cover a whole range of research topics, encompassing ISM chemistry, planetary science, young stellar objects, late-stage stellar evolution, and extragalactic research spanning across low and high redshifts. IRAM expects the successful candidate to possess well-defined scientific interests, pursue scientific programs using the IRAM facilities, and invest up to 50% of the time on astronomical research.
The key responsibilities for the position are:
- The development of software solutions for NOEMA’s scientific pipeline. This includes designing, implementing, and maintaining software components that facilitate the processing and analysis of scientific data.
- The candidate is expected to actively participate in efforts to improve and expand the capabilities of the interferometer. This includes proposing and implementing new features, optimizing existing processes, exploring innovative approaches to enhance the scientific productivity of the observatory.
Required profile
The candidate must possess excellent communication skills and be a team player. Experience in the operation of a radio-astronomical facility and working in an international research environment are highly valued.
