IRAM is an international research organization for millimeter and submillimeter astronomy supported by the CNRS (France), the Max-Planck Gesellschaft (Germany), and the IGN (Spain). The organization operates two world-class research facilities, the IRAM 30-meter telescope in Spain, and NOEMA, the largest millimeter interferometer of the northern hemisphere, in the French Alps. The institute also houses one of the nodes of the European ALMA science support center.
Job description
IRAM is seeking a candidate for a position in the scientific research staff at its headquarters in Grenoble (France).
The selected candidate will contribute to the key operations of NIKA2, the dual-band camera at the IRAM 30-meter telescope: processing and analyzing calibration data with the dedicated PIIC software, developing new tools within PIIC, supporting science data analysis, assisting visiting astronomers and telescope staff, and finally promoting effective observation practices, including the use of PIIC.
The selected candidate is expected to invest 50% of the time on astronomical programs, actively proposing and carrying out new NIKA2 projects for their own research and publications, in collaboration with astronomers inside and outside IRAM.
The current position offers the opportunity to work in very dynamic and competitive fields. IRAM’s research covers a wide range of subjects from ISM chemistry, planetary science, young stellar objects, late-stage stellar evolution, to extragalactic research at low and high redshift.
Required profile
– Hold a PhD in astronomy
– Significant experience in data observation and analysis
– Strong interest in (sub)millimeter astronomy.
– Aptitude and interest in developing software applications
– Good communication skills and team spirit
– Experience at working in an international research environment
The appointment is for two years with the possibility of extension, and could start as early as possible.
Interested candidates should send a curriculum vitae, bibliography, a brief statement of research interests, an outline of future plans, and arrange for two letters of reference.
Employment at IRAM is open to all nationalities, irrespective of gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or religion.
Applications should be sent by e-mail to the IRAM personnel department (jobs-scsu@iram.fr).
