Institute

IRAM is an international research organization for millimeter and submillimeter astronomy supported by the CNRS (France), the Max-Planck Gesellschaft (Germany), and the IGN (Spain). The organization operates two world-class research facilities: the IRAM 30-meter telescope in Spain, and NOEMA, the largest millimeter interferometer of the northern hemisphere, in the French Alps. The institute also houses one of the nodes of the European ALMA science support center.

Job description

IRAM is seeking highly motivated astronomers to work within the NOEMA Science Operations Group (SOG) at IRAM headquarters (Grenoble). The successful candidates will join a team of scientists and engineers and will have access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for astronomical research.

IRAM offers opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations within a stimulating scientific environment. Research at IRAM spans a broad range of topics, from Solar System studies and star formation to galaxy evolution and cosmology. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to pursue an independent and ambitious research program using IRAM facilities and devote up to half of their time to scientific research. They will also have a unique opportunity to participate directly in the development of one of the world’s leading millimeter-wave interferometers and to shape future observing capabilities for the astronomical community.

The position is based in Grenoble, a major scientific hub located in the French Alps and offering an attractive combination of research opportunities and quality of life.

The key responsibilities for the positions are:

  • Contribute to NOEMA’s scientific operation as an astronomer on duty.
  • Support the NOEMA user community in proposal preparation and offer technical expertise for data analysis and interpretation.
  • Participate in the commissioning of NOEMA subsystems to meet operational requirements.
  • Engage in initiatives to improve and expand the capabilities of NOEMA.

Required profile

The SOG is looking for qualified candidates with a PhD, preferably with proven observational experience and a keen interest in (sub)millimeter-wave interferometry.

Excellent communication skills and a robust team spirit are essential.

An aptitude for software development and experience in an international research environment are desirable.

Due to travel requirements and working at the NOEMA site, a valid driver’s license and a successful high-altitude medical examination are required for employment in these positions.

Employment at IRAM is open to all nationalities, irrespective of gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or religion.

What we offer

IRAM offers an excellent working environment, a competitive salary and social security benefits.

The appointment is for two years with the possibility of extension, and could start as early as possible.

Interested candidates should send a curriculum vitae, bibliography, a brief statement of research interests, an outline of future plans, and arrange for two letters of reference.

Applications are to be submitted by email to the IRAM personnel department (jobs-scsu@iram.fr).
