Using combined observations from the IRAM 30-meter telescope (Pico Veleta) and the Yebes 40-meter telescope(IGN), an international team led by the Centro de Astrobiología (CAB) has detected dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in the interstellar medium.

Previously considered a potential biomarker, DMS is now shown to form abiotically. This groundbreaking discovery challenges its reliability as a sign of life—and highlights the remarkable chemical complexity of interstellar space.
