8th IRAM Interferometry School 2012

The 8th IRAM Millimeter Interferometry School took place from October 15 to 19, 2012 at the IRAM headquarters in Grenoble, France. It was designed for students, postdoctoral researchers, and scientists aiming to build a solid understanding of millimeter-wave interferometry and data reduction techniques.

The program featured lectures covering the fundamentals of millimeter interferometry, atmospheric phase correction, data calibration and imaging methods, as well as detailed presentations on the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). In addition to these lectures, participants engaged in practical tutorials focused on interferometric data reduction.

Lectures were combined with practical exercises when possible to ensure that participants not only understand the theoretical background but also gain hands-on experience with real data.

This event was supported by the IRAM node of the European ALMA Regional Center (ARC). Registration was free of charge, with attendance limited to 60 participants. A limited budget was also available to provide travel support for selected attendees.

Fundamentals of mm interferometry – Introduction, antennas & calibration, interferometry principles and techniques

The Plateau de Bure interferometer – The IRAM interferometer, practical usage, and GILDAS software

Calibration – Principles, atmospheric phase, absolute flux, and how the IRAM interferometer is calibrated

Imaging – Deconvolution, mosaics, short-spacings, low S/N and uv-data analysis, practical applications, and tutorial demos

The ALMA project – Overview, practical usage, and data processing
